Its substantial 530-gram weight and wide 8.6×8.6 inch base give it exceptional stability, making it ideal for prominent placement in home temples, pooja rooms, and altar setups dedicated to Lord Murugan.

Arumuga (also spelled Aarumugan) means ‘the one with six faces’ in Tamil — one of the most celebrated and sacred names of Lord Murugan (Kartikeya/Skanda/Shanmukha). Lord Murugan’s six faces (Shanmukha) represent his omniscience and his blessings across all six directions of the cosmos — north, south, east, west, above, and below — symbolising his all-encompassing divine presence and protection. Each of his six faces is said to represent a different divine quality and to bestow a different blessing: wisdom, courage, grace, victory, protection, and liberation (moksha). The Vel (divine spear) is Lord Murugan’s primary weapon and most sacred symbol — gifted to him by Goddess Parvati (Shakti) to destroy the demon Surapadman. The Vel represents Jnana Shakti (the power of divine wisdom) — the sharp, penetrating light of spiritual knowledge that destroys the darkness of ignorance and ego. The lotus base (Padma Peetham) on which the Vel rests represents spiritual purity, divine elevation, and the transcendence of the material world. This Arumuga Vilakku — a sacred oil lamp in the form of the Vel on a lotus base — is one of the most auspicious and beloved lamps for Lord Murugan devotees, especially for Thaipusam, Skanda Shasti, and Karthigai Deepam. Lighting this vilakku is believed to invoke Lord Murugan’s blessings of wisdom, courage, victory, and divine protection across all six directions.

Fill the diya cup with pure sesame oil (gingelly oil) or pure cow’s ghee and use a cotton wick for the most auspicious and traditional flame. Light during morning and evening pooja, and especially during Thaipusam, Skanda Shasti, and Karthigai Deepam. Clean with a soft, dry cloth after use to maintain the gold-toned brass finish and preserve the Vel spear and lotus base detailing. Use brass cleaning powder occasionally to restore the shine. Keep away from moisture and harsh chemicals to preserve the gold-toned finish.
